Lake Lampsilis is named after a freshwater mussel that lived in the lake.
This mussel has a mantle that imitates the shape of a fish. The mantle attracts fish, which are necessary for the growth and transportation of Lampsilis larvae. The larvae attach themselves to the fish’s gills, where they are well-oxygenated and can feed on suspended particles.
This parasitical behaviour favours the growth and dispersal of the larvae. Once they reach the adult stage, the larvae detach from the gills and fall into the sediments.
