Two researchers handling a Niskin bottle and a brown bottle.

With a Niskin bottle, water can be collected at specific depths. Brown bottles are used to collect samples for chlorophyll-a measurements, as this pigment is sensitive to light. Chlorophyll-a is an indicator of the algal biomass in the water.
