The Ekman grab held above water by a biologist.

An Ekman grab sampler is used to collect benthic invertebrates in the sediments.

The Ekman grab is emptied of sediment sample collected.

Sediments collected in this way are then screened.

The sample of benthos is examined.

The benthos collected is examined in a white tray.

The biologist plunges the kick net in the water.

Invertebrates on aquatic plants are collected with a kick net.

The biologist removes the kick net from the water.

The net containing the benthos is out of the water.

The invertebrate samples collected are placed in containers.

Then, the collected invertebrates are placed in containers.
